My last real race in Mexico
The second week of training in Flagstaff has been good. The weather has been changing. It has been windy and cold some days and some have been really nice. Yesterday I was very tired, but today I felt better again.
Still I don't feel ready to compete yet, but it's always like this before the first real race of the year. It will be interesting to see how it works out to compete after I have been working at Adecco during the fall and the winter, and thus not recovering as much as I have been used to for the last few years.
I am glad that I get to go to Chihuahua, Mexico, for my first competition of the year. This year is very special to me, because it is my last season. And starting in Mexico is just perfect. I love to be in Mexico and to compete there. I have always felt at home and very welcome in Mexico.
My first race in Mexico was in 1987 when I was 15. During the "Semana International de Caminata" I was third in Guadalajara and I won in Jalapa. Both were 10k races and in Jalapa I walked 45.45. I will never forget how it was to compete in front of 30.000 crazy Mexican race walking fans in Jalapa. That was amazing!
Now I get to go to Chihuahua and say goodbye to my dear Mexico. I hope to be back sometime, but then probably as an official or on holiday.
This weekend I will enjoy racing in Mexico again and I look forward to meet many of my Mexican amigos again!
